Goals

Should I Get a Fitbit Activity Tracker?

I wrote a blog about what I think is one of the first skills to acquire along your health and fitness journey, or any goal for that matter.  If you have the time, you can read it HERE. I feel very strongly that awareness (w/out judgement) is the best skill to have.  Without it, we aren’t really aware of the choices, behaviors, or habits we are choosing or not choosing to engage in. The BEST way to increase our Awareness (w/out judgement) is through Self-Monitoring. Because as we say in the fitness field, “What gets Measured….Gets Managed!” I can tell you from my own personal experience that self-monitoring was one of the ways I reached my fat loss goals a couple of years ago.  I was tracking my habits I was working on, doing weekly weigh-ins & circumference measurements, progress pics every 6 weeks, and measuring my body fat percentage every 8-10 weeks […]

These 3 Words Can Change Your Life

Have you ever been thinking about a change that you want to make in your life and said, “I need to do or stop doing_________, I should do/or stop doing ___________, or I have to do/stop doing ___________!”  I’m sure you have.  I know that I have and still say those words sometimes.  But these days, I try to be a little more careful of those words!   For example, I need to stop eating sugar.  Go ahead and say that statement aloud to yourself.  After you say it, what happens?  Do you start to think about eating sugar, feel a little angry, resentful, deprived, or does any other emotion come up?  I’m willing to bet that whatever comes up is some form of RESISTANCE!  I want to answer back, “Why? Says Who? I like sugar, and this is going to be hard.  I don’t want to do that!”   […]

How Do I Get More Willpower?

Willpower is finite and can be depleted.  This is a #truth for EVERYONE.  We only have so much of it everyday to use for our various tasks. This includes but is not limited to; not caving into cravings for sugar, fatty foods, or processed carbohydrates, making sure you get your exercise in after a long day at work when you’re tired, pushing through long hours to make a deadline, &/or not slapping that annoying co-worker that you can’t stand.   All of this already sounds exhausting doesn’t it? I’m exhausted after just writing about it ;).  No wonder we’re looking for ways to indulge our impulses and cravings later in the day and evening.  We just want some relief for our stress and to feel better.   But wait….Here’s the GOOD NEWS!  We can make our willpower stronger over time because it’s a lot like a muscle.  But, it […]

READY…SET….SLOW!

I know that this is not a title you’d expect to see from someone as squirrelly as me. You may be even thinking to yourself, “Shouldn’t we be going faster and working harder to get to our goals?” Well maybe during certain circumstances, but today I want to talk about 2 instances when we need to SLOOOOWW DOOOOOWN, and how it gets us to  our health and fitness goals FASTER!   Tired of Overeating and Feeling Stuffed After Meals?   Start slowing down when you EAT….. Eating slow is one of the MOST important habits to learn around eating healthy.  It is not so much WHAT types of foods that you decide to eat, because no matter what (healthy or not healthy), we will eat more when we eat fast and eat less when we eat slow.   The main benefits of eating slow are: – Eat less food and […]

Fat Loss Game Changer: Here’s the First Skill to Acquire.

I know it’s hard to believe, but the skill that could be missing from your health and fitness goals and keeping you from losing weight/fat is none other than the skill of AWARENESS (without judgement, of course).   I know you’re thinking that it has to be more complex than that, but I believe it’s the first step in achieving any goals that you have in fitness, nutrition, health, or any life goal that you may have for that matter.   Wikipedia defines Awareness as “the ability to perceive, to feel, or to be conscious of events, objects, thoughts, emotions, or sensory patterns……More broadly, it is the state or quality of being aware of something.”   Why is Awareness so Important?   Awareness  allows us to observe what’s working and what’s not working when it comes to achieving our goals.  We can’t make changes if we aren’t aware of the behaviors […]
